Dealing With Insomnia As We Age

Many people discover that sleep becomes harder and harder to get as they age. Either they cannot fall asleep until late at night or they fall asleep just fine, only to awaken a few short hours later, not rested and unhappy. There are many causes of insomnia, and it can affect just about anyone. Males and females experience this, as do people of all ages. But in the elderly, the number of people with sleeping problems seems to be on the increase.Anxiety and stress can play a big part in the trouble that these folks have falling and staying asleep. And to make matters worse, when they finally realize that they are having sleeping difficulties, this only adds to the stressful situation. It can quickly turn into a downward spiral. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help yourself sleep better at night. The first thing is something that not enough people take advantage of: exercise. Exercising has physical and mental benefits, helping you sleep is just one of these benefits. Many people avoid exercise, however. Getting exercise doesn't need to be elaborate. Walking for half an hour each day takes only a short while, and the benefits can drastically improve your lifestyle. Start out slow and work your way up until you are happy with the amount of exercise you are getting.A second solution to getting more sleep is to get professional help. Depression is one of the leading causes of insomnia, yet the elderly are the most under-diagnosed demographic when it comes to depression. This doesn't mean that they don't experience this; it, more often means that they are not getting the help that they need and therefore are never given the diagnosis. Because this generation of folks was raised in a different world atmosphere, emotional problems were not addressed as often as they are now. This should not diminish the fact that they might have a problem, however. If you have a loved one that you think is suffering from depression, get them some psychological help. It can only do positive things. Depression can be alleviated in three ways: counseling, exercise, and medication. That's right, just talking about it can help cure depression. Medication can also be prescribed that will help lift their mood. This should not be the only course of action, but rather a combination of the three will help the most. According to one study, an hour of exercise per day was deemed to be more beneficial than the average dosage of an antidepressant.Sleep doesn't need to slip away just because we age. Catching the solutions to insomnia might seem tough, but this is definitely a manageable syndrome. Getting help is an easy solution.

Baby Insomnia - Understanding Your Baby's Insomnia

Baby insomnia is a well-known problem to many parents. The causes are difficult to pinpoint because unlike adults, infants can't communicate to us why they're having trouble falling asleep. it is up to parents to find out why there is a sleep disturbance and how to address the situation. Common causes of infant sleep disturbances are teething, colds, and separation anxiety. The Basics of Infant Sleep CyclesThe sleep/wake cycle of an infant is extremely different from that of an adult. The infant experiences a shorter sleep cycle that is easier to interrupt than an average adult sleep cycle; hunger, noise, and even light can awaken a sleeping infant. While the interruption of sleep is normal, the lack of sleep is not. Infants sleep much longer than adults. Between the ages of 3 months and 1 year, a baby will sleep up to 12 hours and frequent naps are interspersed throughout periods of wakefulness.Baby InsomniaBaby insomnia has a medical name: Infant Sleep Disturbance, or ISD. it is difficult to diagnose because of the sporadic nature of an infant's sleep. At some time or another, most infants experience difficulty sleeping. There are illnesses and environmental factors that play a part in keeping a child awake. Baby insomnia is a common sleep problem for infants and it is a problem for parents as well. They want to know how to treat the problem.Parents that have a child that suffers from baby insomnia are advised to rule out causes such as teething or illness first, and then if these problems aren't the culprit, they are advised to create a better sleep routine for their child. Doctors recommend setting and sticking to regular feeding times, creating a bedtime and sticking to it, and maintaining a quiet, low-light environment for the child while it is trying to sleep. With close observation by parents, and a loving, patient attitude, baby insomnia doesn't have to grow out of control. it is tough for parents to cope with because their routine is disrupted by the baby insomnia too, but in the end there's a resolution for parents that tough it out, identify the causes, and act appropriately. If sleep problems don't resolve with doctor recommended solutions, then returning to the doctor is advised. There may be an underlying illness that is unknown to the family that needs to be identified and treated before normal sleep patterns are resumed by the baby.

How to Cure Perimenopause Insomnia Naturally

The perimenopause is a natural transition in a woman's life which usually occurs around the age of about 52. For some women symptoms can suddenly manifest themselves including a difficulty sleeping properly. Perimenopause insomnia can be very distressing as you toss and turn at night. This is made worse by hot sweats and anxiety as you throw off the bedclothes in an attempt to cool down. There are very simple ways to overcome this problem such as making sure that you have a window open in the bedroom to allow fresh air to circulate. Also don't have heavy duvet covers and blankets on the bed during the summer. Just a light cotton sheet is probably enough.Don't eat a heavy meal too late at night and avoid spicy foods that include chilli powder or ginger. This type of food generates heat and this make your hot flushes a lot worse. Also avoid drinking in the evening as even just one glass of wine can bring on a hot flush. Stick to soft drinks or mineral water.Women of menopause age often have lots of stress in their lives. Teenagers, aging parents and a demanding job, as well as running a home can leave little time for yourself. Stress is a major factor in causing perimenopause insomnia so just take time for yourself in the day and relax. Take up yoga or tai chi to help relieve tension, or treat yourself to a reflexology or aromatherapy session. Some women experiencing perimenopause insomnia find that taking some supplements gives relief. These include black cohosh, red clover and evening primrose oil. Soya based foods such as vegetarian soya mince, soya beans, miso, and soya milk contain phytoestrogens which are similar to estrogen. During the menopause estrogen levels fall and this is what produces the unpleasant symptoms including insomnia and hot flushes.Melatonin is a chemical produced by the pineal gland as darkness falls and encourages sleep. As we age production of melatonin falls and this is another reason why older people find it hard to get a good night's sleep. It can be taken as a supplement and is also a good source of antioxidants.Another reason for perimenopause insomnia is a decline in seratonin. This chemical is released by the brain and encourages sleep. However seratonin relies on estrogen to function properly and during the perimenopause levels fall. St Johns's wort is a supplement that can help with low moods and depression which are also common during the menopause. It can also increase levels of serotonin and melotonin in the body and so help you to overcome perimenopause insomnia.Perimenopause insomnia is very common and experienced by at least 20% of menopausal women so you are not alone if you are one of them. It can cause daytime drowsiness and poor concentration which could prove dangerous if you drive, or cause you to make mistakes at work.

Some popular ones are the ability not to see the time clearly, the ability to walk through walls, different colour sky, light switches don't work but it's still light etc.Important trick to lucid dreamReality checks in dreams will help on how to get a lucid dream but it has been reported that you should also do them whilst awake every hour to make it habit and this habit will soon continue into your dreams. You want to have two reality checks so that you have yourself a fail safe just in case one doesn't work. Starting on the next hour perform two of the following....

Breathing - Hold your mouth and nose and try to breathe? - Should be impossible if you're in reality
Hands - Can you push your fingers through the palm of your other hand? - Impossible in reality
Time - Can you read the clock face? - Should be able to in reality
Reflection - Does your reflection look normal in the mirror? - Should do in reality
Weird - Can you fly or walk through walls? - Should be impossible in reality
Take two of these reality checks and do them on the hour and when you are dreaming once it becomes a habit you will be able to automatically lucid dream on a daily basis!P.S make sure you do two reality checks when you wake up just in case you experience a false awakening (waking up in the dream again but not in actual reality)

3 Steps to Lucid Dreaming

Most people go to sleep, wake up in the morning and occasionally remember fragments of their dreams. By the afternoon, unless it was a very shocking dream, they forget all about it. What would you say if you could not only remember every dream you had, but to control the dream as well? It's like owning a little private universe with a safety check. This interesting phenomenon is called lucid dreaming. The term was first used in the 19th century to describe dreams in which the dreamer is aware that he/she is dreaming. That way the person who is dreaming can be an active participant in the dream. Those dreams can be very vivid and it opens a lot of possibilities for self-improvement and can also be a lot of fun. Psychologists have even used lucid dreams in treatment of patients who suffer from nightmares or different kinds of fears. It is big playground with no limits. After all, most of us spend a third of our lives sleeping, so why not use that time to do something useful? There are some preparations necessary for the lucid dream to occur. The first and probably most important step is to train yourself to remember your dreams. Even if you have a lucid dream, what good is it to you if you don't remember it a few hours later? Get yourself a notebook and put it beside your bed before you go to sleep. Before you drift off into the dreamland, use autosuggestion to help you remember the dream in the morning. Picture yourself writing it all down in the morning the second you wake up. Convince yourself that you will remember it! It is best that you let yourself wake up naturally, without an alarm. That way you have the biggest chances to remember a dream fully. When you wake up, give yourself a few seconds and try to recall what you were dreaming that night. Don't move much! Once you review the dream and remember it fully, write everything down, to the last detail. It will help you remember even more about your dream if you engage yourself in some intensive thoughts about it. Keep journaling your dreams for a few weeks, until you feel comfortable enough with that practice and it becomes a regular habit. It is possible to attempt lucid dreaming sooner, but it will be much easier if you practice dream recall for a while. The more you read about lucid dreaming, and work on it, better it will sink into your subconscious. Try visualizing yourself waking up in a dream few times a day and use autosuggestion before you go to sleep. There is neat trick that can help you get there faster. You have to create a trigger that will inform you that you are dreaming. Is there something that occurs often in your dreams, like running away from someone, or falling suddenly? Meditate about it and visualize yourself becoming aware of the dream once this trigger occurs. If you manage to recognize the trigger in the dream, it will almost certainly become lucid. Even if it's for a few seconds, if you have made the first "waking" within the dream, it becomes much easier from now on.Remember that feeling of waking within a dream well and visualize, visualize, visualize during the day.You can also do "reality checks" every once in a while. Ask yourself if you are awake during the day to make it a habit. If you stick to it, you will start asking that in the dream to. You can also try looking at the digital clocks or reading text. In a dream it is often unreadable or it doesn't make sense. Try reading a paragraph of text and then looking again at the same portion of the text. If it changes, you are not awake. You can also test the laws of physics to confirm you are dreaming. Try running through a wall, or flying! All these little mind tricks can help you wake up inside your dream. Make your own arsenal of tricks and practice as much as you can. There are some very interesting ways to utilize lucid dreams. If you are a programmer or a writer, go looking for that piece of code or text you need to make your project fantastic. If you have fears, go confront them. The worst thing that can happen to you is waking up. If you just want to have some fun, go flying around the neighborhood or bungee jumping without a rope. Your imagination is your limit!

Astral Projection - Lucid Dreaming on Steroids

I consider myself as open minded and although I myself have never experienced Astral Projection does not mean that it is not a real phenomena. Numerous people from diverse cultures all over the world have claimed to have experienced Astro Projection also known as Astral Travel or an Out Of Body Experience, some of which say that they have not only experienced Astral Projection but with practices you can control the experience of this phenomena.OK that's great but what is Astral Projection? Well according to the encyclopedia it is an esoteric interpretation of any form of out-of-body experience (OOBE) that assumes the existence of an "Astral body" detached from the physical body and able to Travel external to the physical body. Astral Projection Astral Travel symbolizes the Astral body leaving the physical body to Travel in the Astral plane. In some religions this is spiritual practice that can involve Travel to higher levels of consciousness called Astral planes. This is commonly described as any sensation of one's Astral body Traveling outside of their physical body to obtain a higher spiritual learning. Now let us take a look at some of the history of Astral Projection and beliefs of some of the cultures that practices it.According to classical, medieval, renaissance Neo-Platonist, later Theosophist and Rosicrucian philosophy, the Astral body is an transitional body of light linking the rational soul to the physical body, and the Astral plane is an transitional world of light between Heaven and Earth composed of the spheres of the planets and stars. These Astral spheres were held to be occupied by angels, demons and spirits. There are similar concepts of "soul" Travel ancient Egypt and a variety of other religious customs, for example ancient Egyptian teachings presents the soul as having the capability of hover outside the physical body in the ka, or subtle body. A common belief is that the subtle body is attached to the physical body by a psychic silver cord.Even Christian religions recognize Astral Travel, but it is a forbidden for Roman Catholics due to the fact that the soul; holds all reason, thought, memories, emotion, attitudes, and beliefs; leaves the physical body during the dreaming state and becomes agnostic indifferent toward The Holy Trinity and is left with no protection.A human soul, when separated from the physical body, during a dreaming state, is without the protection of Jesus Christ, and very vulnerable to molestation by evil demons.Well don't that beat all, I would of believed that the sold unencumbered by the physical man (the physical body) would have been impervious to evil, and sins of the physical man. Well that is a subject for whole new discussion. As you can see the idea of Astral Projection has been around a long time and it is still alive today. Many eastern as well as new age religions practices meditation and have reported having Out Of Body Experiences (OOBE).throughout the 60's and 70's as new age religions where on the rise and practicing many eastern religions ideas such as meditation. During this time a survey was done and reported percentages running from 8% to as much as 50% (in certain groups) that stated they had an out of body experience. The this opinionated nature of the occurrence provides explanations that do not depend on the reality of an "Astral" body and plane. There is little beyond subjective evidence to support the belief that people can actually really "leave their body".Hey this sounds great I would like to get out of my physical body sometimes maybe I would get some relief from my rheumatism. All joking aside many physics, and eastern as well as new age spiritualist believe that Astral Travel can help you obtain enlightenment or a higher spiritual awareness and we could all use a little help in that department. But the question still remains is Astral Projection real or just another form of lucid dreaming.During a lucid dream you have the feeling that you are out of your body not unlike an Out of Body Experience, you can fly, Traveling to other plants. You can do just about anything you want. So is there any difference between Astral Travel and lucid dreaming? Many people, even Astral Travelers, say that there is no difference between the two; while others are of the opinion that they are two unique experiences. The reason they are different is that with Astral Projection you get into the Astral Plane direct out your physical body. When you have a Lucid Dream, you have simply 'missed' the initial Projection.Astral Travelers, say the difference arises typically because of the framework you are entering from. If you project from the waking state, you can encounter some difficulties because of restrictive thoughts carried with you that don't relate to the Astral realm, and require some practice to adapt to the new environment. On the other hand, in a Lucid Dream, having accustomed to the expansiveness of the dream state, you can sometimes have the opposite problem, finding it hard to retain a conscious focus, and thus 'losing lucidity'. With practice of course, both of these will be overcome. In conclusion if you ever had a lucid dream you know that the experience is not unlike that described as Astral Projection and in reality lucid dreaming may be an undeveloped form of Astral Travel and all you need is a little discipline and some focus and you too can be an Astral Traveler.
